me: And, remote D&D would be very different in a forum-based setting rather than an IM setting.
LordDoskious: but I figured I'd ask
point
but still
there have been very successful Play-By-{Mail,eMail,forumPost,BBS,Wiki] D&D games in the past
me: True... I'd imagine, though, they'd either be more like freeform RP, in large chunks per person, rather than a one-line back-and-forthing with the DM.
LordDoskious: well, there is more lattitude granted to players, but I've seen rather good examples of combat as well.
I grant that in certain scenarios the round to hour ratio has much much greater than in tabletop or IM based applications
there have been some combats I've come across that (given the timestamps) lasted for days <_<
waiting on an action
that said, there are ways to mitigate that effect
me: Such as?
LordDoskious: using good RP to defineyour actions in the absence of knowledge of exactly what happens but taking into account the likley things to occur.
also, allowing the DM to use that sort of information to ajudicate your moves after a length of time
ex:
"I swing Wyvern's Sting [Morningstar +2] from side to side, always ready to attack or defend as the need arises. I keep my gaze as mobile as my feet, gauging my enemies for weakness to exploit, but always staying near enough to Brother Abillard to come to his aid should any of the foul creatures threaten his Holy works."
me: *nod* And it also means all die rolls, chance, etc. are under the control of the DM?
LordDoskious: which reads in tabletop gaming as making spot/sense motive checks to see weaknesses each round, attacking when one is desplayed, taking 5 foot steps as the opportunity comes and generally beating the living shit out of the orcs each turn, especially an ones next to the Cleric. ^_^
as the DM, I would generate a spreadsheet of between 5 and 10 million randomized die rolls for each die type and cross them off in order as needed - that is, whenever someone's action needs a roll that isn't provided.
imo, use of formatting to differentiate between RP and gameplay would work very well.
me: Hmm...
LordDoskious: and as the DM I could polish up the battles for input to a narritive-style thread that would (hopefully) read rather like a novel
Ex:
me: Oh, yes...
How would one make sure that the actions a player implies in a more narrative RP post are interpreted correctly by the DM? Would there be a list of set key phrases?
LordDoskious: " The orcs rounded the corner, just as we thought, totally unpreparted for our ambush. Azani and Konrad caught the leader in a devestating pincer attack, while the front rank found their hands full of a druid loaded for bear. Doskious cooly directed a hail of fiery arrows to complement the Sunray conjured by Dae. Reeling, the orcs gathered themselves and as one, smote with their axes. Azani was gashed across her shoulder, while Konrad's sturdy plate protected his midriff. Mniaron's tough hide deflected the blows of her attackers entirely. A second onslaught from the warlock left the corpse of the Orcish leader smoking, and the rest broke ranks and ran..."
um
set phrases would work, or duplicate posts
<_<
private messages also work for obscure stuff I suppose
I'm just thinking about this now
me: *nods*
LordDoskious: I don't mind creating all of the Novel-Thread posts myself
and leaving the players to submit both RP and GamePlay (GP) statements in the same post
me: Would this, strictly speaking, remain a D&D game? Seeing as the format of gameplay would be so different?
LordDoskious: well, I wouldwant to maintain a d20 D&D style rules-set to the game, but while the gameplay may be different from what you are used to in a D&D game, I can assure you that there have been games I've wittnessed and played in that were conducted more along these lines ^_^
personally I prefer a more descriptive style of play
I think it establishes the scene better, makes it easier to imagine
easier to "believe" too
me: I ask because 1) although Rue enjoys tabletop roleplaying/gaming, she dislikes D&D, and the "what makes a certain game D&D per se" eludes me; 2) our characters all already have a working dynamic in terms of Azeroth, and it may be tempting to keep them.
LordDoskious: keeping established dynamics is not a problem as far as I can see, just means either transitioning characters to a gameplay rules set that I'm more familiar with or a more restrictive character creation process for "new" D&D defined characters
I should like to talk to Rue about that dichotomy - like of PnP RP vs. dislike of D&D.
I'm sure I can work something out.

LordDoskious: I'll ask sometime
^_^
anyway, I have to get going
me: All right. I'll put this chat in a forums post so others can pose questions.
LordDoskious: but I will try to be more active on the forums regardless
me: Good.
LordDoskious: thanks ^_^
